In May 1895, when conveying letters from Kirkham Abbey to Birdsall, George Farndale was thrown from his horse and dislocated his shoulder:

 

York Herald, 27 May 1895: ACCIDENT TO A RURAL POSTMAN. On Friday a rural postman, named Farndale, who conveys the letters from Kirkham at Abbey to Birdsall etc, was thrown from his horse and had his shoulder dislocated. Dr Colby, Malton, attended to the injury.
