April 1947: THE BOY AND THE FILM. A thirteen years
old boy, Derrick Farndale, of Edgeley, Stockport, managed to see an “adult
only” film in which people were seen hanging. He was frightened and put his cap
over his eyes, it was stated at the inquest upon the boy, who, two days later,
had been found hanged himself. Medical evidence was that such a film could
affect an imaginative boy and might induce him to make experiments with ropes. The
Coroner said the boy had no intention of taking his
life and hanged himself accidentally. Stockport Watch Committee is to discuss
the question of juveniles getting into “A” film shows. So far, says the
chairman, Councillor W J Davies, they have no had no
complaints.
