There is an undated deed from about the mid thirteenth century recording a grant given by Joan de Stotevile (1216 to 6 April 1276) to Nicholas Devias for service. It included a right to rent amounting to 20s from Farndale land held by Adam de Ellerschae and eleven marcs from two watermills in Farndale (The Yorkshire Archaeological Journal, Vol 16, 1893, page 92).
