1816
William Farndale,
son of Elias and Jane (nee Foster) Farndale, (FAR00224) was baptised at Ampleforth on 6 January 1816 (Ampleforth PR). His father was a labourer.
There is a suggestion in the census records that
his birth place was Bishop Wilton which is some 20 km southeast of Ampleforth
and is closer to where he ended up. But a later census confirms he was born at
Ampleforth.

1841
Census,
Birdsall
William Farndale,
25, an agricultural labourer in the Parish of Wharram le street in the Parish
of Wharram le street and the townships of Baisthorpe
and Birdsall (Grid SE818659) and Wharram Percy (SE 859642).
So he left home
to live alone as an agricultural labourer, about 30km south east of Ampleforth.
By the time he
married he was a Settrington (SE835835), about 8km north of Birdsall. So he had
settled in this area.
1843
William Farndale aged
27, a bachelor, labourer of Settrington, son of Elijah Farndale, also a
labourer, married Ann Wilson aged 20, a spinster, a servant of Settrington,
daughter of Thomas Wilson, a labourer, at the Church, Settrington by banns, on
28 November 1843 (Marriage Certificate).
Both made their mark. The witnesses were Edward Wilson (his mark) and Jane
Piercy. Charles Hudson was the Minister.

Ann Farndale, 48
‘labourer’s wife’
Name left blank,
granddaughter, an infant aged 1 (presumably their daughter Ann’s (then 17)
daughter, but Ann was not living with them – presumably this is Mary J Farndale
(see below). Did William and Ann ‘adopt’ their daughter’s daughter and use the
Farndale surname (since Ann became Goodwill) perhaps as she was born out of
marriage when Ann was 17?
1881
1881

Ann Farndale, 58,
Mary J Farndale,
granddaughter, 12,scholar

Ann Farndale died at Settrington and was buried on 13 May 1886 (Settrington PR).
1887
William Farndale,
74, died at Scarborough District in 1887. The death was registered in the first
quarter of 1887 (GRO Vol 9d page 249). This
makes sense since his daughter Ann had moved to Scarborough by 1901.
