Thomas Farndale appears to
have been charged with assaulting the wife of James Farndale in 1860, but the
case was dismissed:
Carlisle Examiner and North Western Advertiser, 7 August 1860: ASSAULT. Thomas Farndall, hatter, was charged with assaulting the wife of
James Farndall. Complainant said that on Monday, the
30th alt, she was at Mr Carrick's shop, when Defendant took her by the
shoulders and pushed her out of the shop, and then used very ugly expression to
her. Defendant denied the charge. He merely told her to go out of the shop, as Mr
Carrick would not allow anyone to come in and annoy the workmen. The case was
dismissed, the Defendant being ordered to pay the costs, 3s.

August 1860: ASSAULT.
Thomas Farndale, hatter, was charged with having assaulted Sarah Farndale, in
Mr Carrick's hat manufactory, on Monday the 30th ult. He pleaded not guilty.
The complainant, it appears, is the wife of the defendant's brother, from whom
she was separated, her husband allowing her half a crown a week for the
maintenance of herself and child! On Monday she went to Mr Carrick's shop to
see her husband, who, she heard, had been saying something about her. While
talking to him the defendant came up and, without any provocation, pushed her
out of the place and struck her. Defendant alleged that she was making so much
noise that the work of the shop was interfered with. He did not strike her, but
merely pushed her out. He said, in reply to the Bench, that he had not the
charge of the shop. The defendant was ordered to pay costs, 3s, the chairman
informing the complainant but if she was again annoyed
she must make her complaints there when she would get redress.
So his brother was James
