1920: THE RESERVES. In a
keen and exciting game between Brookside Athletic Reserves and All Saints, on Miteham Common, the Saints won by the odd goal of three. Midway
through the first half, F Farndale, playing at centre half, dribbled through
the Saints defence and registered the only goal for the Brooks with a hard
ground shot. Ten minutes later the Saints equalised. There was no further
scoring before the interval. In the second-half the Saints had most of the
attacking, their outside left giving the Brooks defence considerable trouble,
and Clements, at left half, found him a rare handful. The Saints scored their
winning goal whilst the Brooks defence adopted a policy of waiting for the
offside whistle. The visitors tried hard to get on level terms, testing the
home goalie with many long shots, but without success.

Jovial company, good food and warm hospitality were enjoyed by members and
visitors alike at Capel Bowling Club’s dinner at the Kings Head on Wednesday
last week... The toast to the ladies was proposed by Mr F Farndale who
thanked the ladies for their untiring efforts in providing teas after the
play. It added so much to the enjoyment at the matches, both by visitors and
players alike. However, they did not want the ladies to be perpetual tea makers
and he hoped still more of them would join the ladies
team which had such a good record during the season...

CAPEL. … FOLK SONGS. Miss Vinall made flattering remarks about the singing
of the Women's Institute, when she gave an interesting talk and
demonstration on “English folk songs” at last week's meeting. She told how
Cecil Sharpe travelled through the British Isles, collecting the songs handed
down by generations of country men. Mrs Farndale
proposed a vote of thanks to Miss Vinall. Nominations were then made for
next year's committee. After tea, Mrs Vinall helped her daughter to judge the competition
for a home trimmed hat. The winner was Mrs Farndale with Miss Forbes 2nd
and Mrs King third.

CAPEL BOWLING CLUB. A wonderful spirit of cooperation prevailed at the
annual meeting of Capel Bowling Club, held at the British Legion rooms on
Monday.... A suggestion by Mr Farndale that instead of a club captain
being appointed, the selection committee should select a captain for each
match, was opposed by Mr stone. The motion was defeated... Messrs F Farndale
and G Hayward were elected to the committee which is to combine the duties of
selection and handicapping.

the Institute's 30th birthday. Mr Don Cooper was an energetic and efficient MC,
providing a nicely varied programme of team games and dancing. Mrs Farndale
gave a delightful rendering of two Irish songs, “Cockles and Mussels” and “When
Irish Eyes are smiling”, the audience joining in lustily in the chorus. She
was accompanied by Mrs A Cooper, the pianist for the dancing being Mr H Ranger...
