1350
Robert may have been born in about 1350. We don’t know who his parents were.
He probably came from a family of early settlers and farmers. Farndale was
first cleared for agriculture from perhaps about 1220 (FAR00004A). So although we
don’t know about Robert’s parents, it might be supposed that his grandparents
were the hard grafters who first broke up the forest in the dale and started
farming. As Farndale was an extension of the existing estate of Kirkbymoorside
Robert’s ancestors before them, were likely to have come from the land at the
northern edge of the Vale of York, perhaps in the ancient agricultural lands
around Kirkdale. These lands were part of the same landholdings and estate as
Farndale.
19 April 1396
Pardon for a Death
On 19 April 1396 a pardon was allowed to Robert de Wodde of Farndale (FAR00053) , for the death of John Hawlare of Kirby Moorseved, killed there on Monday, the eve of the Purification
in the 18th year.

The
18th year of Richard II’s reign was 1394 to 1395 and the eve of the
purification is on 1 February, the day before Candlemas. So the death of John Hawlare
occurred on 1 February 1395.
See details and research notes.
In 1396 Robert Wodde was pardoned for the death of
John Hawlare of Kirby. The wood family resided in the
dale in the 17th and 18th centuries and [are still] in
the neighbourhood. (Raymond Hayes, Farndale, 1961,
unpublished, page 34).
In 1396, Robert de Wodde of Farndale was pardoned for the death of
John Hawlare of Kirkby Moorside whom he killed there
''on Monday the eve of the Purification, in the eighteenth year''. (Calendar of Patent Rolls,
Richard II, 1391 to 1396, page 695). The Wood family appears thus early in Farndale records and
their name occurs regularly on wills throughout the 16th and 17th centuries and
subsequently on the rent rolls and field books of the Duncombe estate. The name
is still quite a familiar one in the district (Notes on the
History of Farndale in the Middle Ages,
Arthur H Whitaker, Ryedale Historian, Volume 2, 1966, page 59).
1420
Robert
may have lived until
about 1420.
