James Farndale, son of William Farndale (FAR00071) was born in 1630 at Skelton (Father's will at FAR00071).

1654

 

James Farndale, married Isabell ?? at Skelton or Liverton in 1654 (Skelton PR).

1655

Robert Farndale (FAR00094), son of James Farndale, was born in Moorsome on 14 April 1655 (Liverton PR and Liverton BTs).

 

1660

 

James ffarnedail, had one hearth at Moorsome in 1660 (Hearth Tax Returns).

 

The Hearth Tax was introduced in England and Wales by the government of Charles II in 1662 at a time of serious economic need. Although it only lasted 26 years, it had a major impact on our ancestors.

 

The Act decreed that householders who paid more than 20 shillings a year in rent had to pay two shillings per year for each fire, hearth and stove within the property, about £153 per year in today’s money. A payment of one shilling per hearth was collected twice yearly, at Michaelmas (29 September) and Lady Day (25 March), starting at Michaelmas 1662.

Isabell Farndale, wife of James Farndale, was buried at Liverton 19 April 1672 (Liverton PR). She would have been aged about 40.

1675

Guideon Farndale (FAR00098), son of James and Isabell Farndale, was born at Liverton on 29 February 1675 (Liverton PR and Liverton BTs).

 

1678

 

There was a James Farndale who died and was buried at Liverton on 26 August 1678 (Liverton PR, Teeside Archives PR/LIV 1/1) – this could have been another son who died young. It wasn’t the older James who continued to live at Moorsholm until he died in 1682.
