About 1700

John Farndale was almost certainly the first Farndale to live at Kilton. He may have worked there as an agricultural worker or may have farmed there at some stage. Brotton is associated with Kilton.

1705

John Farndale married Elizabeth Bennison on 5 February 1705 at Brotton. He would be 26 years old. Elizabeth may have been a cousin since his father Nicholas had married a different Elizabeth Bennison in 1676.

The entries are not clear and the transcripts record the date of the marriage variously as 5 February 1705, 28 January 1705 and 1694. I have gone with 5 February 1705. 1694 must be wrong given John’s age.  There is also an interpretation of the second entry as An Bonington but a closer inspection suggests both entries are for Elizabeth Bennison.

Elizabeth Benison was the daughter of John Benison (1663 to c 1755) and baptised in Brotton on 20 March 1680. Her grandfather was John Bennison (1650 to 1688) who also came from Brotton.

John’s mother was also Elizabeth Bennison, so assuming the records have been correctly interpreted, John seems to have married into his maternal family, perhaps a cousin. So there may have been a close association between the Bennisons and the Farndales going back a couple of generations.

Elizabeth Benison                                                                                                                        John Benison was baptised in Brotton on 28 December 1663

So whilst John came from Liverton it seems that the Bennison or Benison family came from Brotton and probably Kilton and that might be why the Farndale family moved to Kilton and became established there.
