1910
Wakefield and West Riding
Herald, 18 June 1910: Probably the oldest Court Leet Bailiff in England is Mr
William Varley, Bailiff of the Court Leet of Berwick, Clifford, Aberford,
Boston Spa, Parlington and Garforth. He was 93 last
week, and lives in an out of the way cottage near Potterton Hall, the residence
of Mr and Mrs HS Childe, of Wakefield, with his married daughter, Mrs Farndale,
and his son-in-law, who is the handyman to the popular new residents at the Hall.
Although blind in one eye and not too keen sighted in the other, his other
senses are wonderfully clear. He hears well, speaks well and still carries his six foot form well, but he has never seen the sea!
So Mark was a handy man at Potterton Hall and living with his wife and 93 year old
father in law in 1910.
