Richard Martin Farndale is the son of Martin Baker and Margaret Anne Farndale, (FAR00911).

Richard went to Lancing College and on to Durham University where he was awarded a BA Hons Class 2/1 in Anthropology.

He went to the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery.  He served in Germany, Cyprus (Operations Officer, UN), the Gulf War (Artillery Forward Observation Officer) and in the UK. He served with Second Field Regiment Royal Artillery and First Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, of which he was Adjutant. He was in the Territorial Army between 1995-2000. He commanded HQ Battery and then 207 Battery, 105 Regiment Royal Artillery (V).

Following his army service, he completed an LLM Degree (Distinction) in Law at the University of Edinburgh and subsequently a Maters Degree, LLM in Construction Law (Distinction) University of Strathclyde. He was Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in Scotland from April 2017 to April 2019.

Leader Durham University South Turkana Expedition to Lokori in north Kenya; Anglo Kenyan Lake Turkana Expedition 1985 to Lake Turkana; President Durham University Exploration Society; Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society; Leader military Expedition "Turkana Triangle" 1987 in the footsteps of Count Teleki, crossing the Suguta Valley, one of Africa's hottest furnaces. Leader military expedition across the deserts of South West America in 1989. Summitted Kilimanjaro in 2013.

Richard Martin Farndale married Charlotte Coutts in 1990.  

Their son, James Martin Richard Farndale (FAR01317) was born in 1994.                                                                    

Their daughter, Sarah Louise Farndale (FAR01333) was born in 1997.
