Herbert Arthur Farndale, son of William (gardener of Sutton Courtney) and Mary Ann (nee Carter) Farndale (FAR00498) was born at Sutton Courtney on 13 March 1894 (1939 Register). His birth was registered in Abingdon District, Berkshire on 17 April 1894 (GRO Vol 2c page 283).

Norfolk News and Norfolk Chronicle, 14 July 1906: NORWICH SCHOOL GARDENS. CROOK’S PLACE HOME GROWN FLOWERS. The address given by Mr. Dymond at the Norwich Agricultural Hall the other day on rural education, suffered to some extent from the criticism offered at the close of it by a rural elementary teacher, who pointed out that the only prize that rural education offered to most was an insanitary home, a large family, 12s a week, and the workhouse at the end of it. No answer was made to that criticism, and none need be attempted here. But the advantage of addresses like Mr Dymond’s, and the advantage of all the nature study efforts of which so much is heard just now, is that they are of benefit to town bred boys, to whom a new world is opened up by the study and observation of flowers and plants... Herbert Arthur Farndale was living with his parents, William and Mary Ann Farndale (William was working as a gardener) and his siblings William Claude Farndale (working in a saw mill with J & J Colmans) and Mary Amelia Farndale. Herbert Arthur Farndale, 26, was working as a mustard worker with J & J Colmans.

 

So he was working for Colmans, the famous mustard growers.

 

1923

Herbert Arthur Farndale, 29, a mill hand, bachelor, married Mabel Alice Tink, 25 (born 1898), spinster on 28 September 1923 at St Mark, Lakenham. Herbert’s father William Farndale was a gardener. Herbert lived at 96 Portland Street, Lakenham in the City of Norwich. (MR)
