Kilton

1883

Ernest Farndale, son of Charles and Ann (nee Dale) Farndale (FAR00341), was born in 1883 (letters). Ernest Farndale’s birth was registered in Guisborough District in the second quarter of 1883 (GRO Vol 9d page 500).

1885

There is a memory of all the family coming to worship (at the Methodist chapel in Brotton), all except the youngest, Ernest, and he being only two was left in the care, or so it was thought, of an experienced person. Evidently the little chappie didn’t relish this, so he followed on behind. When he reached the end of Kilton Lane he was lost. Someone seeing him crying, and knowing where the family was, took him to the chapel. So distressed was he and yet so relieved to be with the family that, needless to say, he was never left behind again. Little Ernest died when only 2 ½ years old, but the elder members of the family remember the incident well. (Wainwright, Greta (1966), Brotton Methodist Church, 1866 to 1966).

Ernest Farndale, died age 2 at Guisborough District in 1885 and his death was registered in the third quarter of 1885 (GRO Vol 9d page 285, letters). Ernest Farndale, aged 2 years and 6 months, was buried at St Peter or St Margaret, Brotton on 4 September 1885 (St Margaret, Brotton PR/Letters, Monumental Record).

Whitby Gazette, 5 September 1885: DEATHS. … September 2^nd, at Kilton, Ernest, son of Charles and Ann Farndale, aged 2 years and 6 months. To be interred at Brotton, on Friday afternoon, September 4^th, at three o’clock.

Gravestone Brotton Old Churchyard:

‘In memory of John Martin Farndale son of Charles and Ann Farndale of Kilton who died 3rd February 1875 aged 2 years 11 months.

‘Safe in the Arms of Jesus.’
