Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail, 15 December 1915: CHILD’S DEATH FROM BURNS. ANOTHER CASE AT WEST HARTLEPOOL. The death occurred at the Cameron Hospital last evening of Elizabeth Pugh, aged 4, who was admitted into that institution on Monday, suffering from burns on the body, arms and legs. At the inquest held this afternoon at the Cameron Hospital by Coroner Bell, evidence was given by John Farndale, a labourer, of 41 Whitby Street, to the effect that on Monday afternoon, about two o’clock, he was in his own room on the top landing, when he heard a child screaming. He ran downstairs, and at the first landing he saw the little girl in flames. He started to tear the clothes from the child, and whilst doing so a Mrs Hogg ran to his assistance. Someone wrapped a blanket around the child, and carried her into a room. The room in which the child was burnt was that of Mrs Mann, and not a room in her own house. Mrs Mann, the wife of a soldier, said the mother of the child shouted to her “Maudie, my bairn, has been burned.” The witness said there was a little fire in the sitting room of her house. She closed the door of the room behind her when she left it. Sarah Pugh, the wife of a Sergeant in the army, said that the deceased was her daughter. She left her two children in the house in order to go for her separation allowance. She came back and the children were alright. She again went out to get some food for the children, and it was during her absence on this occasion that her daughter met with the accident. Annie Cook Rastall, the matron at the hospital, said that the case was hopeless from the time of admission. The child died last evening. Evidence was also given by Mrs Hogg and Elsie Jackson. The jury returned a verdict that the death was due to burns accidentally received.

Dundee Evening Telegraph, 16 December 1915: CHILD FATALLY BURNT. The death of a four year old child named Elizabeth Pugh from burns formed the subject of an inquest at West Hartlepool. The child was the daughter of a Sergeant in the army, who lived at 41 Whitby Street.... Assistance was first rendered to the child by a labourer named John Farndale, who lived in the same building, and who, hearing the child screaming, ran out of his room and began tearing the burning clothes from the child. A Mrs Hagg afterwards came to his aid, and the child was wrapped in a blanket. She was terribly burned, and the case was a hopeless one, death occurring in the Cameron Hospital same night...
