Henry Farndale was born on
5 March 1869 (1939
Register), the son of Robert and Mary (nee Butterwick) Farndale (FAR00326) born Hartlepool District. He
was baptised on 19 September 1869 West Hartlepool (West Hartlepool PR). Henry Farndale’s birth was
registered in Hartlepool District in the
first quarter of 1869 (GRO Vol 10a page 162).
When
Henry Farndale was born in 1869, his father, Robert, was 36 and his mother,
Mary nee Butterwick, was 26.

wife, Elizabeth died on 26 April 1915. The Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail,
29 April 1915 reported: FARNDALE – On 26th inst, at
27, Sunderland Street, Elizabeth, dearly beloved wife of Henry Farndale, aged
43 years – Internment on Saturday, cortege to leave 2 o’clock. Deeply regretted.
Elizabeth
Farndale (FAR00814) was
born in 1915. It
seems likely that Elizabeth died in childbirth.
1916
There was an H Farndale reported
as a deserter, but who rejoined. The Police
Gazette, Tuesday 24 October 1916: MEN
REPORTED AS DESERTERS OR ABSENTEES (War Office and Admiralty) who have REJOINED
or who for any other reason, are NOT to be Apprehended: … Farndale, H, stoker
RNR, Pembroke, previously advertised in the Police Gazette on 17 October 1916.
He seems to have been in the Royal Navy reserve serving on the
Pembroke.

Transport Company registered at Finsbury Circus London (out of work); Olive
Farndale, 22, single, born West Hartlepool, home duties; Henry Farndale, 19,
born West Hartlepool, single, general labourer with E A Fortlind
Timber Merchants of Fountain Terrace, West Hartlepool; John A Farndale, 17,
born Stockton, Coggie Tram Driver at plate rolling
mills, South Durham Steel and Iron Company, out of work; Robert G Farndale, 12,
born Stockton, in full time education; James A Farndale, 9, born West
Hartlepool, in full time education; William Farndale, 8, born West Hartlepool,
in full time education; Elizabeth Farndale, 6, born West Hartlepool, in full
time education.
Eagle
Oil and Shipping Company was a United Kingdom merchant shipping company that
operated oil tankers between the Gulf of Mexico and the UK. Weetman Pearson,
1st Viscount Cowdray founded it as the Eagle Oil Transport Company in 1912 and
sold it to Royal Dutch Shell in 1919. It was renamed Eagle Oil and Shipping
Company in about 1930, and remained a separate company within the Royal Dutch
Shell group until it was absorbed in 1959.

The 1939 Register for 26 Robin Street, Bradford listed Henry Farndale,
born 5 March 1869, a retired seaman, widowed; Henry Farndale, born 25 April
1902, single, public works contractor’s labourer; Doris North (nee Farndale),
born 24 March 1906, fly frame spinner; and James A Farndale, born 1 September
1911, general labourer.
