The Story of the Hartlepool 1 Line
Robert Farndale was a shoe maker and master boot maker of Hartlepool and founded a five generation family of Hartlepool Farndales. He traces back to the Great Ayton 3 Farndales and this line can trace directly back to 1512. His family of 7 were associated with Hartlepool and over time some of this family moved to Bradford, South Shields, and Darlington.

The First and second generation

Robert George Farndale was baptised at
Stainton now southern Middlesbrough. His father was a hind (a term for an
agricultural labourer) at Barwick, nearby. |
By 1841 |
The family were living
in Great Ayton. |
5 October 1862 |
Robert married Mary
Butterworth, the daughter of a blacksmith, in West Hartlepool. Robert was a
shoemaker. |
1864 |
John George Farndale was
born in Hartlepool. He became a cement trimmer. He died aged 63 in West
Hartlepool in 1927. |
1865 |
Eliza Farndale was born
in Hartlepool. She died aged 1 in 1867. |
5 March 1869 |
Henry Farndale was born in Hartlepool. By the age of
22, in 1891, he was a sailor, based in Hartlepool. He married Elizabeth Armin
in 1892. They had eleven children over 19 years. In 1901, he was working as a
barman in Middlesbrough, but was back in West Hartlepool working as a
shipwright’s labourer by 1911. By 1921, he was an Able Seaman in the
mercantile marine, working with the Eagle Oil
Transport Company (which operated oil tankers between the Gulf of Mexico
and UK, founded in 1912 and sold to Royal Dutch Shell in 1919), although he
was out of work that year. He was a retired seaman by 1939, living in
Bradford. He died in Bradford in 1952, aged 83. |

William Farndale was born in Hartlepool. In 1901, he
worked as a hotel barman in Stockton. He married Elizabeth Shackleton in
Hartlepool in 1902. They had four children. He later worked on a poultry farm
and later as a fitter’s labourer for J Finsley Limited, hauling engineers at
Westfield Engine Works in Darlington. He seems to have married Asneath
sometime after 1921. He died in Darlington in 1948, aged 76. |
1874 |
Elizabeth Farndale was born in Hartlepool. She was a
domestic servant by 16, in Hartlepool and later lived with her brother, John
George Farndale. She died aged 43 in Hartlepool in 1915. |
10 November 1877 |
Robert Farndale was born in Hartlepool. By the age
of 28, when he married Ethel Barrett, he was a hotel manager. They had three
children. He joined the Labour Corps ad the Royal Sussex Regiment in the
first world war. He died in Hartlepool in 1936. |

motor car fitter’s labourer and they had two children. She died in Bradford

In 1892, Robert George Farndale was involved in the
proposal of Christopher Furness, a steamship owner and shipbuilder, as the
Liberal candidate for West Hartlepool. |
14 January 1900 |
Robert George Farndale, a master boot and shoe
maker, died of pneumonia in West Hartlepool at the age of 67. |
The third generation
1 July 1894 |
Ethel Farndale, daughter of Henry Farndale was
baptised in Hartlepool. She was a fish dealer’s assistant in Hartlepool and
married Sidney Burns in 1916. She died in Hartlepool in 1926, aged only 31. |
13 November 1895 |
Hilda Farndale, daughter of Henry Farndale was born in
Hartlepool. She married Fred Wager in 1920 and they lived in Bradford until
they moved to Bradford by 1939. She died in Bradford in 1946. |
19 August 1897 |
Edith Farndale, daughter of Henry Farndale was born
in Hartlepool. She married George Blackburn, a commercial lorry driver, in
Bradford in 1920. She died in 1953. |
22 January 1899 |
Olive Farndale, daughter of Henry Farndale. She
married Hazekiah Wager in 1922 and they moved to Stockton and then Bradford.
She died in 1989. |
25 April 1902 |
Henry Farndale, son of Henry Farndale was born in
Hartlepool. By 1921, he was a general labourer with timber merchants in
Hartlepool and by 1939 was a public works contractor’s labourer. He married
Maria Pratchett in 1940. He died in Bradford in 1948. |

William Robert Farndale, son of William Farndale,
was born in Hartlepool. By 1921 he was an oiler with the north eastern
railway company at Bank Top Railway Station in Darlington. He married Alfreda
Brown in 1936. He died in Darlington in 1995. |
27 March 1904 |
John Armin Farndale, son of Henry Farndale was born
in Stockton. By 1921, he was a coggie tram driver at a plate rolling mill
with the South Durham Steel and Iron Company in Hartlepool. He married
Charlotte Georgeson in 1932 in Bradford and they had two sons, born in South
Shields. He seems to have travelled to Michegan, USA in 1957. He married Mary
Haigh in Bradford in 1959 and he died in Bradford in 1984. He is founder of the South Shields 1 Line.

Farndale, was born in Hartlepool. She was later a hairdresser in Darlington.
She married Albert Bedford in 1944. She died in 2005. |
