His nephew, also called Joseph Farndale (FAR00463) born on 6 April 1864, became Chief Constable of Margate, York and Bradford. Amongst other things he was the inventor of the police box.

Thomas Henry Farndale (FAR00699) became an Inspector in the Criminal Investigations Department in Surrey in the 1940s. He investigated crime during the Second World War (a real life Foyle’s War) and continued to do so in the fifties.

William Farndale (FAR00369A) and Peter Farndale (FAR00373) were both solicitors’ clerks in Stockton.

The Law Breakers

The scale on the other side was heavily weighted by the medieval Farndale poachers of Pickering and other places. They were perhaps the outlaws who later gave rise to the Robin Hood legends.

Smugglers Tales

For tales of smugglers at the time of the Farndales of Kilton, see John Farndale’s writings. John Farndale, ‘Old Farndale of Kilton’ (FAR00143) told many a tale of smugglers and their daring adventures and hair breadth escapes.
