The Leeds 1 Line
A family of shoemakers who moved to the Bramley district of Leeds
|
|
John Farndale was born in 1826 in Coxwold. He married Sarah Brittain in Leeds in 1856. They settled there, in Bramley, and had a family of eleven children (though many of them died young). John was a cordwainer (a cordwainer makes new shoes distinguished from a cobbler who mends shoes) in Bramley. Several of his children were also shoemakers.
Bramley experienced an industrial boom and an increase in population in the nineteenth century, mostly due to the development of the woollen textile industry in the early nineteenth century and due to the boot making and engineering industries in the later part of the century.

The Ancestry of the Leeds 1 Line
The Leeds 1 Line can trace back from William to the Ampleforth 1 Line as follows:
John Farndale (FAR00293), 1826 - 1902
Jethro Farndale (FAR00218), 1790 - 1882
Elias Farndale (FAR00184), 1755 – 1831
Elias Farndale (FAR00147), 1733 - 1783
At the present time I have been unable to trace this line back to older lines of Farndales. With more research I may yet find the link to the direct Farndale history back to 1512. It seems likely that Elias will be linked to Farndales in other lines, and I am sure that all those using the Farndale name, are linked to the early family lines, such as the Kirkleatham Skelton Line, the Liverton 2 Line, the early part of the Kilton 1 Line, and the Kilton 2 Line. I am also sure that all Farndales will share in the medieval ancestry which is described in Volume 1 of the Farndale Directory.
Chronology of the Leeds 1
Line
First, Second and Third
Generation
17 October 1826 |
John Farndale the Elder
was baptised in Coxwold. |
By 1841 |
John Farndale the Elder
was a shoe maker’s apprentice to Richard Sivers in Easingwold. Easingwold is
near his birth place, but perhaps as he drew into the shoe trade, he became
drawn to Leeds, and Bramley in particular, which was becoming a centre of
shoe making amongst other trades in the later part of the nineteenth century. |
3 February 1856 |
John Farndale the Elder married Sarah Ann Brittain
in Leeds. By now John was a cordwainer. A cordwainer is a shoemaker who makes new shoes from
new leather. The cordwainer's trade has been distinguished from the cobbler's
trade, according to a tradition in Britain that restricted cobblers to
repairing shoes. That said, the word cobbler has become widely used for folk
who make or repair shoes The Oxford English Dictionary says that the word
cordwainer is archaic, "still used in the names of guilds, for example,
the Cordwainers' Company"; but its definition of cobbler mentions only
mending, reflecting the older distinction. |
1857 |
Joseph Farndale, son of John Farndale the Elder and
Sarah Farndale, was born in Bramley, Leeds. He became a shoemaker himself in
Old Hall, Bramley, and married Martha Tomlinson in 1883. He died in 1891,
aged only 34. |
1858 |
Mary Elizabeth Farndale, daughter of John Farndale the
Elder and Sarah Farndale, was born in Bramley, Leeds. She died aged only 3 in
1861. |
1859 |
Alice Clark Farndale, daughter of John Farndale the
Elder and Sarah Farndale, was born in Bramley, Leeds. She died aged only 5 in
1864. |
1860 |
Elias Farndale, son of John Farndale the Elder and
Sarah Farndale, was born in Bramley, Leeds. He probably died in 1871. |
1861 |
Jethro Farndale, son of John Farndale the Elder and
Sarah Farndale, was born in Bramley, Leeds. Jethro was a shoemaker by 1891,
in Bramley. He died aged only 32 in 1893. |
1862 |
Peter Farndale, son of John Farndale the Elder and
Sarah Farndale, was born in Bramley, Leeds. In 1878, Peter Farndale was a
clerk in the town clerk’s office and by 1881, he was a shoemaker in Bramley. |
1863 |
William Farndale, son of John Farndale the Elder and
Sarah Farndale, was born in Bramley, Leeds. William died aged only 1, in
1864. |
1865 |
Elizabeth Farndale, daughter of John Farndale the
Elder and Sarah Farndale, was born in Bramley, Leeds. By 1881, Elizabeth was
a shoemaker’s machinist, probably working for her father, in Old Hall,
Bramley and she was still in that role in 1891. In 1896, she married John
Gall and they had a son. John Gall was also a boot and shoemaker and she
continued to work as a boot machinist. Elizabeth Gall died in Bramley in
1912. |
1868 |
William Farndale, son of John Farndale the Elder and
Sarah Farndale, was born in Bramley, Leeds. William was working as a labourer
in Bramley by 1891. He married Jane Wright in 1895. After he married, he was
a drayman and a carter in the Holbeck district of Leeds. |
1872 |
Walter Farndale, son of John Farndale the Elder and Sarah
Farndale, was born in Bramley, Leeds. Walter Farndale died in Cheshire in
1922. |
1872 |
John Farndale the Younger, son of John Farndale the
Elder and Sarah Farndale, was born in Bramley, Leeds. By 1891, he was a
shoemaker in Bramley. He died aged 50 in Bramley in 1920. |
1 August 1885 |
Leeds Mercury: |
14 December 1895 |
(Warrington Examiner, 14 December 1895 and again in
early 1896) |
1 March 1896 |
Joseph Farndale the Younger, son of William and Jane
Farndale, was born in Bramley. In 1911, Joseph was a ‘skiver’ – skiver is
sometimes used to describe leather, so perhaps he was working with leather,
maybe for the shoe making industry. |
19 February 1898 |
Alfred Farndale the Younger, son of William and Jane
Farndale, was born in Leeds. |
16 July 1900 |
Frederick Farndale the Younger, son of William and
Jane Farndale, was born in Leeds. |
1902 |
John Farndale the Elder died in Bramley, aged 76. |
6 March 1908 |
(Shipley Times and Express, 6 March 1908) |
By 1911 |
Alfred Farndale was working as a splitting machinist
in Holbeck. |
1914-1918 |
Private Joseph Farndale served in the Ordnance
Corps. Private Alfred Farndale served in the 9th
Lancers. |
1926 |
Joseph Farndale married Minnie Brown in Bramley. |
1930 |
(Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer 21 April
1930) |
1934 |
William Farndale the Elder died in Leeds. But not sure who this was: (Leeds Mercury 21 May 1934) |
1937 |
Joseph Farndale may have been working with the licensing
authority for York. But this may not be him. |
1939 |
Joseph Farndale was working as a general labourer
and heavy worker. Alfred Farndale was a rag metal broker in Leeds. Frederick Farndale was a general labourer and heavy
brickworks labourer. |
18 September 1950 |
Joseph Farndale died in Leeds. Alfred Farndale was a broker and dealer in Leeds. |
6 March 1964 |
Frederick Farndale was buried at Cottingley Hall
Cemetery, Beeston, Leeds. |
1978 |
Alfred Farndale died in Leeds. |
Third Generation
1926 |
William Farndale, son of Joseph and Minnie Farndale,
was born in Leeds. William married Rosemary Scarborough in 1950. They had a
daughter, Allison. William died in Leeds in 2000. |
1931 |
Frank Farndale, son of Joseph and Minnie Farndale,
was born in Leeds. Frank married Annie Ewan in 1959 and they had a son,
Andrew, born in 1959. Frank died on 16 October 2016. |

Marlene Farndale, daughter of Joseph and Minnie
Farndale, was born in Leeds. Marlene married John Pratt in 1955 and it is
believed they emigrated to USA. |
