The story of the Thirsk Line

William Farndale was born at Craggs. He married Mary Coverdale in 1916 and they moved to Danby before farming for forty years at Plane Tree Farm, Maunby. His son Herbert farmed at Ash Tree Farm, nearby. William and Mary had the children and a large family of grandchildren and great grandchildren live today around Northallerton or further afield.

William Farndale, son of Matthew and Ann Farndale, was born at Craggs Hall Farm.

9 December 1916

 

William Farndale married Mary Emma Coverdale at Danby in Cleveland Wesleyan Church.

28 February 1917

Herbert Farndale, son of William and Mary Farndale, was born in Danby.

 

22 July 1918

Mary Farndale, daughter of William and Mary Farndale, was born in Danby. Mary was a dairy maid at Plane Tree Farm, Maunby with her family in 1939. She married William Phillips in 1940.

 

2 May 1920

Dorothy Farndale, daughter of William and Mary Farndale, was born in Danby. Dorothy was a housekeeper at Ash Tree Farm, Maunby in 1939 and she married Cyril Thompson in 1943. She died in 2005.

 

By 1921

 

William Farndale was farming around Guisborough.

 

Shortly after that William and Mary moved to the Thirsk area. They farmed for 40 years at Plane Tree Farm, Maunby, Thirsk where they brought up a family of six sons and four daughters. They moved to Plane Tree Farm in 1921 and retired in 1960.

 

William Farndale was for some time a member of Thirsk Rural Council and Chairman for a short period. He was also a member and former chairman of Northallerton National Farmers' Union. He was a foundation governor of the Allertonshire Modern School and relinquished office when a new school opened and the original school became a girl's school. In 1966, at the time of their Golden Wedding, they lived at 41 Ainderby Road, Northallerton.

Charles Farndale, son of William and Mary Farndale, was born in the Thirsk area.

 

1923

Leslie (Les) Farndale, son of William and Mary Farndale, was born in the Thirsk area.

 

1926

Gladys Farndale, daughter of William and Mary Farndale, was born in the Thirsk area. Gladys married Joseph Leslie (“Leslie”) Craven in 1949 and they had two children. She died on 8 October 2018.

 

1928

William (“Bill”) Ernest Farndale, son of William and Mary Farndale, was born in the Thirsk area.

 

1930

Eileen M Farndale, son of William and Mary Farndale, was born in the Thirsk area. Eileen married Frank Berry in 1973. She died in Lancaster in 1999.

John Francis Farndale, son of William and Mary Farndale, was born in the Thirsk area. John married Margaret Hugill in 1959 and they had a daughter, Rachel. He died on 13 February 2019.

 

1937

Donald Farndale, son of William and Mary Farndale, was born in the Thirsk area.

 

By 1939

 

William Farndale Senior with his wife, Mary, were farming a mixed farm at Plane Tree Farm, Maunby. Charles Farndale was a horseman on Plane Tree Farm. Mary Farndale was working as a dairy Maid.

 

Herbert Farndale was a mixed farmer at Ash Tree Farm, Maunby. Dorothy Farndale was a housekeeper at Ash Tree Farm.

 

1945

 

Charles Farndale married Joyce Cowton in Northallerton. They had two daughters, Sheila and Patricia and a son, David.

1949

 

Herbert Farndale married Sheila Wearmouth in Northallerton. They had a daughter Kathleen and a son Peter.

1952

 

Leslie Farndale married Mary W Coates at Northallerton. They had a daughter Gillian and a son Richard.

1953

 

William Ernest Farndale marred Betty Metcalfe in Northallerton. They had a son, Anthony and a daughter, Susan.

1960

After William Farndale Senior retired, the farm was farmed by their sons, John and Donald.

 

1966

William and Mary Farndale’s Golden Wedding.

 

1968

 

Donald Farndale married Jillian Crookston in Wensleydale. They had three children, Michael, Katherine and John.

1970

 

Herebrt Farndale of Red House Farm, Maunby, died in Northallerton and is buried at St Michael’s and All Angels, Kirby Wiske, about 8km NW of Thirsk.

1974

William Farndale Senior died in the Northallerton area and is buried at St Michael’s and All Angels, Kirby Wiske.

 

1982

Charles Farndale died.
